On Paper by Shae Scott Blog Tour: Review

Title: On Paper
Author: Shae Scott
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Release Date: August 18, 2015

Synopsis

“Expectation is the root of all heartache.” William ShakespeareKeaton Harris always thought he would be reporting from the front lines as a hard-hitting news reporter. He never expected to become a best-selling romance writer. But the job definitely has its perks, like the long line of ladies who are eager to become his muse for a night. He doesn’t expect to meet Quinn Ryan at a book convention. He doesn’t expect to be taken with her so quickly. She is beautiful. Smart. Quiet…and totally giving him the cold shoulder.Quinn has no interest in becoming a Keaton Harris groupie, no matter how hot he is. She learned a long time ago that playboys make dangerous playthings. But when he proves to be more than she expected she finds herself weakening to his charms. One week. That’s all it was supposed to be. One week to have an adventure, to be someone else. It was never supposed to go any further than that.Maybe that Shakespeare guy was on to something.

My review, I received a copy of this for my honest review.
Every once in awhile I take a step away from my world of fantasy and science fiction. It was a nice change of pace from what I am used to. I particularly enjoyed that this book revolved around the book world, one I am proud to be a part of.
The writing itself was a bit to get into. I felt like the story dragged on for some time. Things were said that didn't need to one said, sentences that weren't necessary. That was not the only problem I had. I felt impatient because of this and not just because I wanted to get to the conclusion but also because it seemed like there was a lot of filler sex. Need some more word count? Throw another sex scene in! It's a good thought but something else has to happen in order to keep your reader interested. I'm not here to read about sex, I'm here to read about life.
Those are my only complaints. The characters were well rounded. Keaton is the character to follow. He has an amazing character arc and becomes changes who he is in the end. Most of us readers are going to easily connect with Quinn because she is an avid bookworm. Meeting one our favorite authors would be a dream come true but falling in love with one? That is a true fantasy. She is a cautious little girl and I think that was genius. Girls who live in the pages of their books see bad guys and traps throughout their novels, hard not to see them in real life.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was different than what I am used to and a good read. It was a beautiful disaster of a romance that kept me hooked until the very end.

My Thoughts: I have read some great books recently but this one stands out the most out of all of them. There is a lot of emotion that comes with this book. Relationships are not what they seem and packed full with betrayal. Those are the best because that is what keeps the readers on their feet. Nobody wants predictable, what they want to be surprised.
Breaking this down by section I have to start with the characters. At times, Zoey was not very likable to me but she grew to me. I think what bugged me the most is she was two people. Constantly throughout the book she was changing back and forth. She is the character we follow yet we know nothing about her and learn certain aspects as we follow along her story. Maybe that is for effect and maybe it’s not but either way I’m not complaining. She ended up being just the main character we needed. Ryker was kind of switches back and forth as well from bad guy to good guy but I can see the reasoning behind that one. He’s the enemy in Zoey’s life, who knew he would become an ally? Their relationship is a tricky one but it makes it makes for a good story.
This story is clearly more about Zoey than it is about Ryker but I am a bit disappointed we didn’t see more of Garrett and Amara. They were pretty important in the beginning but Garrett only popped up once only for nothing to happen. It left this untied feeling to the story. We found out what the DMG wants from Zoey but Ryker’s story never really gets fully told. Just gives me more of a reason to hold out and see what happens in the next one!
Overall, I actually enjoyed reading this one. I was nervous about it because fae stories usually don’t sit well with me but this one was nothing like the other ones I have read. It’s original and an amazing story. I’m glad I got to read this one before its release tomorrow. I hope everyone gets a chance to read it as well, you will not regret it.

Balancer by Patrick Wong

Balancer (The Final Deity #1) by Patrick Wong
YA Fantasy/Paranormal
Rating:  5 Stars

When teenagers Nicole and Amy save a child from a freak wildfire, they unwittingly trigger a bizarre sequence of events. In the following days, Nicole finds herself caught up in more extraordinary happenings, until she is forced to confront the startling truth about herself: She has the power to give life or take life from every living thing around her. As Nicole tests the extent of her powers, her activities attract the attention of mysterious agents who believe the girls are part of a larger terrorist plot. Now on a trail into the unknown, Nicole and Amy will be forced to question just what is real — and who they can trust.

My Thoughts: This was a fantastic book. It was completely original and took me out of my element. I love the supernatural and I love it even more when someone comes out with something fresh. This book is so good I can look past the fact it’s a juvenile book, or a very young adult. I could see a middle school child reading this but not so much someone for high school or older.
Amy and Nicole are like any other teenager. Innocent and carefree. Nicole is a very selfless and relatable character. When put into a troubling situation she acts very adult like proving she is strong enough to handle whatever is thrown at her. Amy is a little less mature but at the same time she compliments Nicole’s character. They are opposites but more like ying and yang.
The one thing I didn’t particularly like about this one was how it jumped back and forth between characters. I had to pay extra attention when I came to a new chapter because it abruptly changes from one to the other. That was not enough to push me away from the book though. I still ended up loving it. The ending was unbelievable. I honestly never saw the betrayal coming let alone that one of the agents was a bad guy. I knew something was up with one of them but never guessed that.
Overall, the book was aimed towards a younger audience than me but I still enjoyed the entire thing and I am glad I got a chance to read this. I received this book from the author through Goodreads.com.

Review and Giveaway! Redeemed by P.C. and Kristin Cast

Redeemed (House of Night Series #12) by P.C. and Kristin Cast
YA Fantasy/Parnormal
Rating: 5 Stars

In REDEEMED, Zoey and her friends face the ultimate battle with evil, which will determine the fate of the world, both human and vampyre. Neferet has finally made herself known to mortals as a Dark Goddess, and she is loose on Tulsa, OK and the world. No single vampyre is strong enough to vanquish her - unless that creature has the power to summon the elements as well as the ability to wield Old Magick. Only Zoey Redbird is heir to such power…Find out who will win and who will lose in this epic battle of Light versus Darkness.

My thoughts:
I remember the day I picked up the first House of Night novel. It was just after it first released and I had never heard of it. I was still in high school at the time and my new English class really wanted to get us back into reading so we were required to read a certain amount of books and write papers about them. To get us back into reading my teacher set up a field trip to bring us to the local Barnes & Noble to pick out books that the school will buy for us, or if they don’t want to then she would personally cover it. I ventured back to my fantasy and paranormal section and I came across Marked. I didn’t grab it at first because I want to weigh my options but eventually I went back and I grabbed it. That was the only book I got that day. The minute I started reading it I could not put it down. It was a new take on vampyres and it was amazing.
Eventually I bought more books in the series. I wanted to share my love for this series I created the first ever House of Night Facebook page, which is still growing. That page opened so many doors for me. I worked freelance for St. Martin’s and I have met so many amazing people. It also made me realize I wanted to be a writer. It made me rethink my whole life and I ended back in school for a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing for Entertainment at Full Sail University. In one year I will be graduating and hopefully have an amazing career in writing.
This series changed my entire life and I will never forget that. P.C. and Kristin Cast are my idols. I owe them so much and they don’t even know it. Someday I hope to meet them and tell them. Their tour never brings them to Wisconsin so I have never gotten the chance. I am thrilled and sad to write my last review for their series. It’s not over yet because soon there will be a movie series and even more to talk about. For now, we will stick with this review.
When we last left the House of Night Zoey Redbird has made some mistakes and believes that she is now a murderer. As the audience we know this not to be true. Neferet killed those men and many others. She has ousted herself to the world as the evil person she is.
I have waited seven years for this finale and I can say that I was not disappointed. I don’t want to give any spoilers so I’m going to try be as giving as I can without giving out any important pieces. This novel is the perfect ending to such a long series. A story that took twelve books to share it with us and to me it was well worth it.
In the beginning the story was about Zoey but as the series continued the story grew into more than that. We started jumping into someone else’s head and eventually each character had their own story to tell and I think P.C. and Kristin Cast did it beautifully. They all had their flaws but they were well rounded and had their part in main focus of the story. Of course, Aphrodite is the one who grew the most out of all of them. In the beginning she was the enemy but became a major part of the Nerd Herd’s circle.
There is so much more at play in this novel. We have Old Magick was that was introduced a few books ago but we also have a much darker Neferet. It has been a very violent journey for Zoey but this one is different from the rest. This novel is dark and full of death, definitely a lot more detail and horror. It’s like the series grew up with us growing darker and darker with each book.
To finish this review I have to say again how much I enjoyed this series. It was a wonderful journey and it could not have ended any better. The Casts created this entire new world and didn’t hold back. They gave us many extra books to make the experience even better, like the Fledgling Handbook 101 and all of the novellas. This book, like all of the others, pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go until the very last “The End” was read. It’s sad to see such a beautiful series end but at the same time it was joyous. I will never regret picking up Marked and I will never regret sticking with this series until the very end.

Along with this review, I have been given the opportunity to a House of Night Goddess Gift Giveaway.
